When will those with power ever learn?

This Linked In blog by Nathan Udoh is reproduced without amendment in the hope that those responsible have learnt or have been held accountable. I have never met Nathan Udoh but his story is similar to that of too many other NHS staff at the moment.

In October 2022, 10 months after starting my new job at NHS England as a Programme Manager, I was accused of harassment by a white female business support officer. I was put through a formal fact-finding investigation which concluded I had no case to answer and I was exonerated by NHS England who stated I had acted within organisational values and expected behaviours.

However, there was a residual complaint stating she was overburdened with work load from me despite efforts I had gone to building a rapport and helping her with her work. Senior managers involved in this case decided to escalate the untested complaint to HR before I heard about it. Once I heard about the complaint, the decision to proceed to a formal fact-finding investigation was already decided upon.

My body and mind were under a significant amount of stress from this case and by 19th May 2023, I relapsed into a mania episode of my bipolar disability as I was sectioned under the mental health act in distressing circumstances. I lived successfully before this without an episode of bipolar for 18 years. While on sick leave for 2 years, NHS England did not conclude on my grievance which caused me profound stress. This stress triggered 2 more relapses for me in May 2024 and June 2025 causing huge distress and disruption to me, my family and my friends.

On 14th November 2025, the legal case I brought against NHS England for claims of Direct Race Discrimination, Direct Sex Discrimination and Disability Discrimination ended after five days in court. After I had given three straight days of evidence and only one of NHS England’s nine witnesses had given their evidence, NHS England agreed to settle my legal claims by paying me a six figure sum of money

“Suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, and character, hope…” I have been locked into hope for three long years 🙏🏽 A massive heart-felt thank you to my Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Trade Union Representative, Matthew Harris, RCN Solicitors Ferguson Doyle and Beth Holt, Secretary Dee Amarghan, and Cloisters Chambers Barristers- Declan O’Dempsey and Charlotte Tosti. They have been incredible fighting for me and I’m truly blessed as a result of their tireless and committed advocacy for me over the last three years

A massive shout out and thank you to the wonderful Michelle Cox who has mentored me as I’ve navigated my unimaginable suffering. My family have been by my side through everything of course, thank you to my brother David Udoh and sister Claire Andrews, but especially my incredible and awesome wife and beautiful life partner, Katie Udoh who has been my rock, especially at my lowest (and highest!).

“In all things God works for the good of those who love Him” As the wise man Joseph said: “God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.” As for me I will never be employed again but I have plenty of work to do…
